Launching a Digital Payment Platform in Under Four Weeks

For licensed financial institutions, obtaining regulatory approval is often only the first milestone. The next challenge is building the technology required to deliver modern banking services like customer onboarding, payment processing, account management, mobile applications, compliance, and operational workflows.

Developing this infrastructure internally can take months or even years, delaying market entry and increasing operational costs.

This case study demonstrates how Crassula and ClearBank enabled a UK-licensed Electronic Money Institution (EMI) to launch a fully operational digital banking platform in less than four weeks using a pre-integrated Banking-as-a-Service architecture.

Client Profile

The client is a UK-authorised Electronic Money Institution providing multi-currency accounts and international payment services for businesses and retail customers.

Operating with a streamlined organisational structure, the company focuses on compliance, customer acquisition, and business development while outsourcing technology and banking infrastructure to specialised providers.

Their objective was straightforward: launch quickly without building or maintaining a banking platform internally.

The Challenge

Although the client already possessed the required regulatory licence and a clearly defined business model, they faced several significant challenges before launching their services.

To launch successfully, they needed to provide customers with:

  • GBP and EUR payment accounts
  • UK domestic payment capabilities
  • International payment services
  • Digital onboarding for individuals and businesses
  • Web and mobile banking applications
  • Administrative tools for operations and compliance

Traditional banking technology vendors estimated implementation timelines ranging from six to eighteen months, requiring substantial upfront investment, internal engineering resources, and ongoing platform maintenance.

For a growing fintech, this approach was neither commercially viable nor aligned with their desired speed to market.

The client required a solution that could be deployed rapidly while remaining scalable for future growth.

The Solution

To accelerate delivery, the client implemented a two-layer Banking-as-a-Service architecture combining Crassula's white-label banking platform with ClearBank's regulated banking infrastructure.

Crassula

The product layer

Crassula delivered the complete customer-facing banking platform, including:

  • White-label web banking portal
  • Native iOS and Android applications
  • Customer onboarding with automated KYC and KYB verification through SumSub
  • Core banking workflows
  • Payment orchestration
  • Transaction management
  • Administrative Back Office
  • Unified API connecting multiple financial providers

ClearBank

The banking infrastructure

ClearBank provided the regulated financial infrastructure powering the platform, including:

  • A comprehensive GBP and EUR account infrastructure, including operating, client money, customer segregated, and safeguarding, utilising real and virtual account structures
  • Direct access to the UK's core payment schemes, including Faster Payments, Bacs and CHAPS
  • SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT) capabilities for euro-denominated payments
  • Multi-currency accounts supporting balances in up to 11 currencies

This enabled the client to launch a fully branded digital banking experience without developing proprietary software. By leveraging ClearBank's infrastructure through Crassula's platform, the client gained immediate access to major UK and European payment schemes.

Extending Capability Through Ecosystem Partners

One of the project's key advantages was flexibility.

In addition to ClearBank, the client integrated several specialised providers through the Crassula platform, including:

  • A secondary payment institution for expanded SEPA capabilities
  • A compliance monitoring solution
  • Additional payment services connected through the same API layer

Rather than managing multiple integrations independently, every provider was orchestrated through Crassula's unified platform and administered from a single Back Office.

This architecture reduced operational complexity while giving the client the freedom to expand services without rebuilding the platform.

Results

The project achieved rapid deployment while delivering a comprehensive set of banking and payment capabilities.

Four separate financial service providers were connected through a single Crassula API and managed centrally via one administrative interface. The client operates the entire banking service without an internal software development team.

Looking Ahead

For fintechs, EMIs, payment institutions, and embedded finance providers, speed to market has become a significant competitive advantage.

By combining Crassula's Banking-as-a-Service platform with ClearBank's regulated infrastructure, financial businesses can significantly reduce implementation time, minimise technical complexity, and launch scalable digital banking products with confidence.

Rather than investing months building and maintaining banking technology, organisations can focus on growth while relying on proven infrastructure trusted by regulated financial institutions.
